Vice President of the NRA, Wayne LaPierre, recently spoke at the Conservative Political Action Committee in Washington about how the reelection of Obama in 2012 will mean the end of Americans’ gun rights. He said that the President’s low-key approach to gun laws these past 4 years was only a “conspiracy to ensure reelection by lulling gun owners to sleep.” LaPierre’s basis for this claim is Obama’s Supreme Court appointees, Elena Kagan and Sonya Sotomayor, and their rabid anti-gun stances. He claims that if Obama remains in office and is allowed to appoint one more similar-minded justice, the 2nd Amendment will be erased.
While LaPierre’s speech was clearly biased, as he is the Executive VP of the NRA, it is no secret that Obama and his supporters do not believe we should have the right to own our own firearms. It is also true that Obama has been relatively silent on gun control in recent months leading up to election time. If LaPierre’s predictions are correct and Obama is, in fact, planning to violate the 2nd Amendment if he is reelected, Americans will lose our fundamental right to protect ourselves. What many gun control advocates fail to understand, or understand but choose to ignore, is the fact that the people we do not want in possession of guns, the criminals, are not going to abide by the anti-gun laws. The only people who will be affected by these laws are the good, law-abiding citizens who will then be unprotected from the delinquents who could care less if there is a law forbidding them from owning guns. If LaPierre is right about Obama, then America will indeed have a very big problem if he is reelected.
