That quote by Basil Grant’s character in The Club of Queer Trades by G.K. Chesterton perhaps best describes the politics of the modern world. Have we forgotten that government is but “the creation of the human mind, and therefore is congenial to it”?
Ah, but isn’t is glorious? I tell you I don’t know if I would have it any other way. I feel as Hezekiah must have felt in the thirty-second chapter of 2 Chronicles. “Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him: With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles” (2 Chron. 32:7-8). Or perhaps as Moses’ parents must have felt. “By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment” (Hebrews 11: 23).
It is not always fun to feel lonely or to feel ostracized. And, I admit that it is scary to feel cornered by those with power over your life. But, oh, the redeeming power of those moments — moments I can only think to illustrate by way of analogy — when the crisp wind of rightness hits you, and nothing matters but the glory of standing for the truth. This is why I feel sorry for “moderates” or secular people; they can never feel the exhilaration of correctness. Correctness not in part, but in whole.
At least, my immediate reaction to reading about Angela Merkel this morning was a puffing of my chest. Not “vainly” but with the humble pride that can only come in opposing despots, all the while not wanting to (I have been reading way too much Chesterton).
Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, went before our congress to urge action on climate change. Because, surprise, surprise, she wants us to agree to an internationally-binding resolution or law or whatever they call those farces these days.
Angela Merkel is, as I said before, a despot.
If I have followed anything closely the past few months, I have followed the passage of what is known as the Lisbon Treaty. The Lisbon Treaty is a constitution that will (after a few kinks are worked out) unite all of Europe into one communist pact. Europe will have (officially, not unofficially any more) a national anthem and a flag. They will even have a president.
There are twenty-seven people on the European Commission who make tens of thousands of binding-laws for all of the twenty-seven member states of the European Union. The sovereign states’ ability to do anything regarding laws it does not agree with (for example, abortion is illegal in Ireland) will be, under the Lisbon Treaty, further restricted as the European Union will have consolidated its power so as to become an irrefutable super-state.
Only Ireland was allowed by a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. Last year, regardless of the fact that every single major political party was for it, regardless of the pressure from the European Union, Ireland voted no to the Lisbon Treaty. Basically one millionaire fought it, Declan Ganley, and won. He won against the corrupt European Union who is not afraid to spend hundreds of thousands of tax dollars to suppress any opposition. Declan Ganley is a patriot and I love him for it.
A couple years earlier France and the Netherlands voted against the like European Constitution. These referendums force the European Union to halt ratification because all twenty-seven member states have to ratify a treaty before it can take effect.
But, the European Union doesn’t care. Ireland was forced to have another referendum this year. And, because Declan Ganley doesn’t have the power to tax, his income is not endless like the European Union’s, so he was out of the race. And guess what? The EU won. Imagine that. They won because they never intended to take no for an answer because they hate democracy and freedom. But, don’t worry! They love fighting climate change! Whoo-hoo!
Angela Merkel didn’t allow Germany a referendum of course. She would much rather have fascist control over the future of all of Europe than stand for freedom. Her party, the Christian-Democrats, is known in Germany for being in “das mittle” (literally “the middle”) because they are the supposed moderates. Well those “moderates” (0h how I hate the term) happen to be the largest political party in Europe. Germany will gain a considerable amount of voting power when the Lisbon Treaty takes hold. I wonder if the absolute authority will go to any of the political parties’ heads? Especially the largest party in Europe . . .
Anyway, the next time Angela Merkel comes to you commanding that you act on climate change, you tell her that this isn’t Germany. This is not Europe. This is a free nation. We aren’t fascists here. We won’t sell our nation’s soverignty or our soul as you have done.
Climate change is a vessel meant to take you on the fast track to tyrannical rule by political elites. Wake up. I pray, as Elisha prayed for his servant, that God will open your eyes and let you see. And, when you, the free people of the world wake up and see the climate change fanaticism for what it is, you will “behold, an host compassed the city about.” You are that host. Only you can fght the world governments on this by simply believing the truth. The truth is redemptive. Do not be afraid of the king’s commandment “for there be more with us than with him.”
Lastly, may I say, God save Nigel Farage and the United Kingdom Independence Party, Declan Ganley, and Czech President Vaclav Claus who have fought (with lesser known others) against the monstrosity that is the Lisbon Treaty. And, may God save Europe. And, may God save us from the poisonous rot of collectivism.

yeah crowder and i had a heated discussion about this earlier. it is a big stretch from him to compare himself to hezekiah, or any bible character for that matter. not to mention, it is arguable that the bible not only condones but demands "collectivism." whether or not government is the most suitable vehicle for redistribution remains to be seen. also, i doubt god wants us to act to the detriment of our planet.
using bible verses to advance a political agenda is dangerous. i cringe every time i see it, this being one of those times.

Justin, you're fudging lines pretty blatantly. The CDU in Germany isn't the middle, and they aren't known as the middle. (Auf Deutsch, sie ist klar eine Mitte-Rechts Partei.) The middle in such a liberal place as Germany is probably somewhere in the SDP, but Germans are pretty dissatisfied with them at the moment and are moving right to indicate that. Merkel is in a coalition with another right-wing, free-trade, pro-business party as well, the Free Democrats (the FDP). The ideological responsibility of her push for climate change action can not be off-loaded onto anyone but the German political right. (The left, of course, wants action too, but this is Merkel's initiative). This is a good lesson that American conservatives ought to take to heart: you can be a pro-business conservative and still support binding action against climate change.
Also, it makes absolutely no sense, whatsoever, to call Merkel a fascist. In no way, shape or form. I can't even really think of a pathetic, last-ditch straw man argument that would claim Merkel as a fascist.
